CMMs and contact measurement instruments are accurate but unsuitable for the demands of modern industrial production: production rates, the production environment, and fragile parts.
Too slow for production
A CMM measurement takes several minutes per part. It is impossible to inspect 100% of production at industrial speeds without slowing down the line.
Fragile or easily deformed parts
Mechanical contact is not possible with fragile, flexible, or hot parts, or with parts whose surfaces must not be touched.
